In 2023 UNESCO added 866 kilometres of ancient caravan roads across Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to the World Heritage List — part of the network that linked China to the Mediterranean for almost two thousand years.
Today you can travel these routes: Samarkand and Bukhara, Ancient Panjakent, the fortresses of the Tian Shan, bazaars trading much as they did a thousand years ago.
